Many patients assume that back pain automatically requires an MRI. However, in most cases, imaging is not the first step.

Clinical guidelines recommend starting with a conservative approach for most episodes of low back pain, as many cases improve with time, movement, and appropriate care.

🌿 Chiropractic Care: A Conservative First Step

Chiropractic care is considered a conservative, non-invasive approach to managing many types of back pain.

Treatment may help:

✅ Improve spinal mobility
✅ Reduce muscle tension
✅ Support healthy movement patterns
✅ Improve function and activity levels
✅ Help patients return to their normal daily activities

Many patients experience significant improvement without the need for advanced imaging.

⚠ When an MRI May Be Recommended

An MRI may be appropriate when:

  • Pain persists despite conservative treatment
  • Symptoms have lasted longer than several weeks
  • Pain is severe and worsening
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness develops in the legs
  • Sciatica symptoms are significant or progressive
  • There is concern for disc injury or nerve compression
  • Surgery or other advanced treatment options are being considered

An MRI provides detailed images of discs, nerves, and soft tissues that cannot be seen on standard X-rays.

🚩 Warning Signs That Require Immediate Medical Attention

Seek prompt medical evaluation if back pain is accompanied by:

  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Significant leg weakness
  • Numbness in the groin or saddle area
  • Recent major trauma
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fever or signs of infection

These symptoms may indicate a more serious condition requiring immediate attention.

💡 Remember: More Imaging Isn’t Always Better

Research has shown that many MRI findings—such as disc bulges and degeneration—are common even in people who have no pain at all.

For this reason, MRI findings should always be interpreted alongside a thorough examination and clinical history.
